Phew what a scorcher.

With temperatures in the back room at Halo high enough to melt metal it’s a wonder anyone turned up at all. As it was we were packed out yet again and all the slots were gone in mere minutes. How everyone stayed in the room all night, I’ll never know. I got through three giant bottles of water, but had to keep dipping out to cool down. So apologies to those performers I didn’t see.

David Johnson thanks to Hester Brodie for photo’s.

This, our twelfth night at Halo, saw David Johnson, fab poet of many years standing and an acoustic night regular, take the long slot of 20 minutes after the break. David is well known for his hilarious poems of life, and today we heard how his got his wedding tackle caught in the hoover and how Hull police were taught to use poetry. But David also gave us several great poems about his tour of the states with fellow poet Pete Hunter. Glorious one about Breakfasts in America, including, oh please, cinnamon croissant deep fried in batter.Ian Sills took the mantle of MC tonight, never an easy task, and did a great job. We also roped in Hes Brodie to take pictures of everyone. Thanks Hes.Phil Baber, who goes from strength to strength, bravely took the first slot. Phil regularly sings in French and Spanish, but also writes his own songs.

Doug Gina-Briganti Ita-2

This week, July 3, we saw several Acoustic Night virgins. They were Doug, he of the amazing auburn mop. Fantastic voice, great songs, catch him busking in Bristol and give him money. Also: Ash (sorry I was outside at the point trying to lower my body temperature), Kevin (hilarious songs, watch out the police), Richard Lawon (only foul ines of verse, but what lines!), Bobby with great poems, Mark Mathey (missed him too, it was a very hot night), and the highly unusual Rachel, singing for only the second time in public and before about 30 people, accompanied by Baz using a guitar as a drum.Regulars tonight were: Craig Wilson, Cathy Keal (celebrating her birthday with her bitter wit), John Terry (trainspotting takes on a whole new meaning), Ita, David Sollors, Carol, Dr Joel who as usual had the whole room roaring like a tiger, the wonderful Gina Briganti and Everton, Cute Loony and Tony Lewis Jones.

Huge apologies to all the people who arrived too late to get a slot. We couldn’t believe we filled up so quickly on such a sweltering night. Please come back next time. Be at Halo at 7.15pm prompt to sign up.
We’ve been working on some great acts for the upcoming long slots and they are:
July 17 – Pete Eldrige: a regular from our days at the King Charles. Well worth a watch.
July 31 – Cute Loony, now that’s what I call music.
August 14 – Website launch night!
Expect projections of the new site put together by our resident website wizard Boydon Goodman. To celebrate all the hard work he’s doing for us, we’ve asked him to do the long slot. Boydon’s poetic take on life ranges from the hilarious singles columns through the gritty and moving Carriage to the bitter Your Number. Fab stuff.
