The First 12 Years
Late 1994 –
Tim Gibbard books the first Acoustic Night for a
Thursday night
at Stokes Café (now Take 5, Stokes Croft. It’s jammed and quickly
becomes a weekly event.
Performers include:Guy Malzoons, Kennedy, George,
Jim, Rob Scicilliano and Plastic Jesus. It last nine months
and they lose their licence for being too raucous.
Jasper Hardhat Taro Atmosphere, AKA Jasper, becomes
the organiser with Ethosphire., opening as Son of
Stokes, at Jesters Comedy Club. Spin offs include
all day and 24 hour poetry events at both Stokes and Jesters.
Acoustic Night even has a spell in Bedminster.
Late 1995 - Jasper ran it with Lhina
Robson, at the Pickled Newt for around six months until
settling at the Brew House. Jasper leaves for
Southampton. Lhina runs it on her own for about a year. Performers
include: Invisible Voice, Andy from the Sad
Old Bastards, guitarist Stephen
King and poet Polly Carr (now Polly
Moyer).
1998 – Pete Hunter takes on role of organiser and MC for nearly four years. Regulars include Ian Sills, David Johnson, Alison Wade, SJ Esau, Bucky, Jane Taylor, Mirrimar and Nathan Filer. He introduces theme nights, such as Christmas in Space. The venue remains the same but goes through several incarnations. It is now The Croft.
New Year 2003 – Mal Travers takes over from Pete. Acoustic Night moves to the King Charles. Mal creates our first website, creates the guest slot, and post recordings on the website. Performers include: Lou Bell,bOYDON gOODMAN, Hal Camplin, Phenzwaan, and Pete Hunter, Pete Gebler. Acoustic Night hits the doldrums.
New Year 2006 – Andi Langford-Woods, Julian Ramsay-Wade, Ian Sills, Hazel Hammond, Catharine Stott and Helen Gregory form a collective to run Acoustic Nights and it moves to a fortnightly Monday slot at Halo, Gloucester Road. Performers include Suzy Condrad, Everton Hartley, Tim Gibbard, Cathy Keal, Cute Loony and many, many more.For a full history click below.
